English without Barriers

Gateway has developed a teaching method focused on real learning for students. Through dynamic activities and didactic exercises, students quickly overcome one of the principal obstacles to learning: the difficulty of listening to and speaking English.

Gateway has 19 years of experience and has taught more than 500 students, organised 16 trips abroad, and developed 5 immersion courses. Most importantly, Gateway has a deep commitment to providing the most efficient foreign language training courses. We offer understanding and experience for those who demand quality in their work. Our students find quality classes and quality learning.

Maria José, who has 39 years of experience in teaching and years of study, is the creator of a methodology that is truly innovative and effective. For Gateway, teaching English means presenting a new world to students and providing new speakers to the world.

Breaking the Sound Barrier

With our BSB - Breaking the Sound Barrier method, Gateway professors promote fluency from the start. Students break their own barriers and limits, becoming immersed in the language as it is. Two of the primary differences between English and Portuguese are intonation and rhythm, and these are the pillars of BSB.

With this differentiated and innovative approach, we develop courses according to the profile of each student and each group. Part of our task is to research the most suitable books and other materials for each student. This brings the classroom must closer to the reality and goals of the students.

We also offer exchange courses and organized trips abroad, which may be arranged for closed groups to stimulate English thinking and truly experiencing life in English. We have already travelled to the United States, the United Kingdom and Australia, and we have international partner schools: New England School of English, Converse, Harven, Language Specialists International and OISE Language Coaching.

Trying to understand Gateway through words alone is like trying to understand the experience of taking off in an aeroplane simply from another person's description – only someone who has flown knows what it is like. Come to Gateway, try our BSB course and take off for yourself into a new world – the world of speaking English.

Gateway: an opening, an entrance to something else

After visiting the school, the renowned author Adrian Underhill wrote: “A Gateway is an Opening, an Entrance to Something Else" , a poem expressing the meaning of our name and associating it with our work.

Professor Adrian Underhill's text:

"A Gateway is an opening
An entrance to 'something else'
You can see what's beyond the gate
That It's somehow prized, special, not usual
But you can't get there till you're ready
And then the gate opens.
A Gateway has a keeper
Who has herself been beyond
And by setting up the Gateway
She tells the passers-by
Look, here and there are different
This attracts those who are after something else
And then the gate opens"
